Download the TSM Client and Register Your Server

1. If you have not yet done so, please fill out the Backup Service Request form to register your server with the UW-IT Backup Service. Make note of the node name you have been assigned.
2. Download the latest version of the TSM client.

Install the Client

1. Mount the .DMG file you downloaded.
2. Double-click on 'Tivoli Storage Manager.pkg'.
3. Run through the installation wizard to install the TSM client on your server.
   

Configure the client

1. Open the TSM client by clicking on the Tivoli Storage Manager icon on the dock.
   1. Note: you may be prompted to install Java 6 on your server. Please do so before proceeding.
2. Upon loading, the TSM client will start a configuration wizard. For the most part you can use the default options, but use the settings below when prompted for them by the wizard.
   • Node Name: use the node you were supplied by the Backup Service Request form.
   • Server Address: attic.u.washington.edu
   • TCP Port: 1510
   • Server Stanza: Attic

3. After completing the wizard, you will be prompted to login into the TSM server. Your user id is the node name you supplied by the Backup Service Request form. A UW-IT technician will supply you with the password.

4. Once the client has loaded, go to the Edit menu and select Client Preferences.
5. In the preferences editor, on to the Authorization tab on the left. Then select Password Generate in the password access section. You do not need to specify a path in the Location field below.
6. Click OK to save the configuration.

Configure the TSM Client Acceptor Daemon

Before automatic backups can begin, the Client Acceptor Daemon needs to be running on your server. This is the process that listens for backup requests and executes them. To set it up:

1. Go to the Applications folder.

2. Open Tivoli Storage Manager folder and double-click the TSM Tools for Administrators icon.

3. Choose Start Client AcceptorDaemon then click OK.
4. Enter your OS password when prompted.
5. A window will pop up once the client acceptor daemon has started. This can take several seconds.

TSM Client Log Retention Settings

By default, the TSM client will append to dsmsched.log and dsmerror.log files indefinitely. It is recommend that you configure them to rotate automatically. In particular, the dsmsched.log file can grow to several GB in size if not pruned regularly since it stores a record of each file backed up, recalled, or etc.

To rotate dsmerror.log file entries:

1. Open the TSM GUI and open the preferences editor by going to the Edit->Client Preferences menu.
2. Click on the General tab.
3. In the Error Log section, select the check box for 'Prune Old Entries', then select the number of days you'd want to retain error log entries.
